Title Singapore Banks Set to Post Higher Q4 Profit Amid Global Trade Uncertainty

As the fourth quarter earnings reports roll in, analysts are predicting stronger profits for Singapore's leading banks. Driven by robust net interest income and higher fees, DBS Group, Oversea-Chinese Banking Corp. (OCBC), and United Overseas Bank (UOB) are expected to post higher net profits in Q4 compared to the same period last year.

The positive outlook is attributed to a higher-for-longer interest rate environment and strong inflows of wealth underpinned by Singapore's political stability. However, the forecast is not without its challenges, as global trade uncertainty threatens to undermine economic growth.

According to market strategist Yeap Jun Rong at trading platform IG, In such a scenario, local banks might need to increase provisions for potential bad debts amid rising growth risks, which could come at the expense of earnings. Additionally, heightened global uncertainty could dampen loan demand, as businesses and consumers adopt a more cautious stance on borrowing and spending.

The three Singaporean banks are scheduled to announce their Q4 results in February. DBS Group will release its earnings on February 10, followed by OCBC on February 19 and UOB on February 26. Besides the outlook, analysts will be focusing on capital return plans, including potential special dividends and bigger share buyback programs.

UOB is expected to surprise with a significant special dividend payout, according to Thilan Wickramasinghe, head of research for Singapore and regional head of financials at Maybank Investment Banking Group. DBS Group is also likely to announce a special dividend, although the amount may be lower than UOB's.

Looking ahead, some moderation in banks' earnings is expected as Singapore's economy slows down in 2025. The country's central bank has warned that shifts in global trade policies could weigh on domestic manufacturing and trade-related services sectors.

However, Wickramasinghe notes a potentially beneficial scenario for banks stemming from an inflationary environment created by trade tariffs. This would make the Fed cautious on easing too early. A higher-for-longer interest rate scenario is likely to support net interest margins for Singapore's banks, he said.

In conclusion, while global trade uncertainty poses a risk to Singapore's economy and its banks, there are also opportunities for growth in an inflationary environment. As the country's central bank navigates these challenges, it will be essential to strike a balance between managing economic risks and supporting growth.

Enjoy the little things in life. For one day, you may look back and realize they were the big things. Many of life's failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.
