Seoul says NKorea fires 10 missiles toward sea

North Korea has fired 10 missiles into the sea off its eastern coast on Monday, according to South Korean officials.
This is in violation of UN resolutions that ban Pyongyang from engaging in any ballistic missile activities. The missile launches were timed so that each one would have fallen outside the range of the Aegis-equipped US and South Korean warships in the area. This was confirmed by a South Korean defense official. Each of the missiles traveled about 25 miles, according to the officials who spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to speak publicly.
In response to the launch, Japan's Defense Ministry said four of its surface-to-ship SM-3 IIIB interceptors were fired from Aegis-equipped Japanese warships and successfully destroyed North Korean ballistic missiles. These missiles were launched in March 2015 when North Korea conducted a successful satellite launch that also was widely criticized as an illegal ballistic missile test.
North Korea has carried out a series of rocket launches and nuclear tests in recent months, despite sanctions by the United Nations Security Council aimed at halting its increasingly sophisticated weapons programs.
The latest launches were timed for Monday morning so each one would fall outside the range of the Aegis-equipped US and South Korean warships in the area. Each of the missiles traveled about 25 miles, according to officials who spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to speak publicly.

North Korea's state-run media has not reported on the latest launches, though it did say the country is prepared for any eventuality following the UN Security Council's condemnation of its nuclear tests.
