As professionals in the digital art industry, we spend a significant amount of time collaborating with our colleagues in a work environment. In fact, according to a survey titled Who Americans Spend Their Time With, by Age, conducted in the United States from 2009 to 2019, people aged 20-55 typically spend three hours per day socializing with coworkers. This means we're surrounded by our colleagues for most of our waking hours! However, what if these coworkers could also be our friends – people we genuinely like and enjoy spending time with?

My Experience Building a Fitness Community

As a data engineer at First Circle Growth Finance Corp., I had the privilege of starting a running club in my office. It began as a casual gathering of colleagues who shared a passion for fitness, but when my vice president pitched the idea of using after-work activities to build interdepartmental communities, I saw an opportunity to take it to the next level.

By hosting runs that brought together colleagues from various departments, I was able to expand my network and foster meaningful friendships with people outside of my usual work circles. The run club became a space where we could bond over shared experiences, overcome adversity, and push ourselves to achieve our fitness goals.

The Power of Fitness Building Communities and Fostering Employee Well-being

Aside from the community-building aspect, after-work fitness activities like running or hiking offer numerous health benefits. According to a 2022 study by the World Health Organization, over 31% of adults are not getting the recommended amount of physical exercise.

In today's sedentary society, where many of us spend eight hours daily sitting at our desks, it's more important than ever to find ways to counterbalance this inactivity. Exercise can help reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, cancers, and mental health problems.

Enjoy the little things in life. For one day, you may look back and realize they were the big things. Many of life's failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.
