5 Lessons Learned from Iran War has 'disproportionate impact' on Asia Paci[4D[K
Pacific
By Mike Smith, CEO of Asia Pacific Financial Forum (APFF)
The Iranian conflict is having a disproportionate effect on the Asia-Pacifi[11D[K
Asia-Pacific region. While the majority of my time in business is spent adv[3D[K
advising large corporations and governments on economic matters, I have spe[3D[K
spent most of this year consulting with countries impacted by what has beco[4D[K
become known as the Iran War.
1. The cost of war will be paid for by ordinary people
The first lesson we learned from our study was that the impact of war is al[2D[K
always borne by ordinary people, not those who start it or benefit financia[8D[K
financially. In 2019, the United Nations estimated the number of civilian d[1D[K
deaths in armed conflict at over 100,000, and this year has seen a further [K
increase.
When military operations are carried out on a large scale, they will result[6D[K
result in many more deaths among innocent civilians. And as we know from hi[2D[K
history, it is usually the poorest members of society who suffer most when [K
war breaks out.
2. International organizations can't protect us
The second lesson learned from the Iran War is that international organizat[9D[K
organizations such as NATO and the United Nations are becoming increasingly[12D[K
increasingly ineffective at preventing conflict or helping those affected b[1D[K
by it. These organizations were created to maintain world peace, but they h[1D[K
haven't lived up to their promise in the past few years.
3. The rich get richer while everyone else suffers
The third lesson we learned from Iran War is that the wealthy will continue[8D[K
continue to become wealthier even as the rest of us struggle through hard t[1D[K
times. In some countries where APFF operates, more than half of all private[7D[K
private wealth is held by just one percent of the population.
4. No country is safe from war
Another lesson we learned from Iran was that no country is immune from conf[4D[K
conflict. We have seen wars break out in Syria, Yemen and Ukraine in recent[6D[K
recent years. As a result, there are many displaced people around the world[5D[K
world who need help now more than ever before.
5. War is always about money
The final lesson we learned from this war was that everything comes down to[2D[K
to money. The fact is wars happen because someone stands to make a profit o[1D[K
off them.
I hope you found these lessons as interesting and informative as I did. Ple[3D[K
