Title Empowering Filipino Youth The Crucial Role of Teaching Social Media Literacy in Elementary Education

As we navigate the digital age, it has become increasingly vital that children learn how to safely and responsibly navigate the internet. In recognition of this importance, Senate President Pro Tempore Jinggoy Estrada has filed Senate Bill (SB) 2934 to incorporate internet and social media subjects into elementary and high school curricula.

The proposed legislation aims to equip students with the knowledge and tools necessary to protect themselves from online dangers as they become increasingly technologically savvy. By integrating internet safety education into the school curriculum, we can create a safer online environment for our children.

The Internet Safety Protection Act will focus on teaching students about safe usage of social media apps, text messaging, instant messaging, websites, blogs, emails, and mobile devices. Additionally, it will emphasize the importance of privacy protection, identifying fake news, avoiding cyberbullying, and recognizing online predators.

Moreover, the bill highlights the significance of responsible internet use and maintaining a balance between online and real-life interactions. The Department of Education (DepEd) will be tasked with developing an Internet Safety Education Program that includes educational technology, multimedia applications, and lesson plans.

The program will also provide professional training for teachers and staff, develop online risk prevention programs for children, support peer-driven initiatives, and coordinate research on online risks. Furthermore, the DepEd will launch public education campaigns, educate parents on safe internet use, and coordinate with other agencies for resources and guidance.

By teaching social media literacy in elementary education, we can empower our children to make informed decisions about their online presence and protect themselves from the ever-evolving threats of the virtual world.

Enjoy the little things in life. For one day, you may look back and realize they were the big things. Many of life's failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.
