Title Stock Market Rebounds as Peso Weakens Investors Hunt for Bargains

The Philippine stock market staged a strong rebound on Tuesday, driven by bargain-hunting and positive earnings results from major corporations. Meanwhile, the peso weakened for the second consecutive trading day.

The benchmark Philippine Stock Exchange index (PSEi) rose 101.48 points or 1.69 percent to end the day at 6,094.96, while the broader All Shares added 67.78 points or 1.88 percent to 3,678.94.

The peso's decline continued, weakening by 12 centavos to P58.15 per dollar. This comes as the US dollar strengthened against major global currencies, causing concern among investors.

Despite market volatility, investors took advantage of the dip to hunt for bargains. Optimism over 2024 corporate results also helped in driving the market higher following sound earnings reports, said Philstocks Financial Inc. research manager Japhet Tantiangco.

The day's trading was characterized by a strong oversold bounce led by Ayala Land Inc. and SM Prime Holdings Inc., according to DragonFi Securities, Inc. equity research analyst Jarrod Tin. The market appeared to pause from heavy selling, lacking cues from the US market due to its trading holiday, he added.

Regina Capital Development Corp. Managing Director Luis Limlingan attributed the market's rebound to the signing of implementing rules and regulations (IRR) on corporate tax cuts. This move is expected to boost economic growth and attract more investments.

On a sector basis, property stocks led the way, rising 3.32 percent. Mining and oil was the sole decliner, down 0.17 percent. All other sector indices closed in the green.

On a company basis, gainers outnumbered decliners, 101 to 72, while 64 remained unchanged.

While the market rebounded, experts caution that investors should remain cautious until a clear catalyst emerges. We expect PSEi to maintain a cautious stance until a clear catalyst emerges, said Tin.

As the stock market continues to navigate uncertainty, investors will need to possess chutzpah – a Yiddish term meaning boldness and determination – to make informed decisions in this volatile environment.

Enjoy the little things in life. For one day, you may look back and realize they were the big things. Many of life's failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.
