Title Empowering Education Government Takes Swift Action to Address Lack of Principals in Public Schools

The Second Congressional Commission on Education (Edcom 2) has welcomed a crucial government move aimed at ensuring every public school in the Philippines has a principal, regardless of size. According to Edcom 2's Year 2 report, an astonishing 25,000 public schools lacked a principal, hindering efforts to provide quality education.

Education Secretary Sonny Angara acknowledged the pressing issue and assured swift action would be taken to address it. This is an eye-opener. So many of our schools operate without a leader – because that's what our principals are, the leaders of our schools. To tackle this challenge, the Department of Education (DepEd) will deploy over 15,000 qualified teachers as principals while updating the principal hiring process.

The initiative has received approval from President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., a move hailed by Edcom 2 co-chairman Sen. Sherwin Gatchalian. Addressing these concerns is a significant step forward to ensure that every public school in our country is a conducive space for learning.

To address this issue, the government will take the following steps

1. Appoint qualified teachers as principals The National Qualifying Exam for School Heads passers will be appointed as principals.
2. Reassign officials Principals detailed to offices will return to their assigned schools.
3. Fill surplus positions Surplus principal positions will be reassigned to schools in need.

Edcom 2 co-chairman and Pasig Rep. Roman Romulo emphasized the importance of addressing gaps in education, stating that it is critical to building a brighter future for all Filipinos. He praised the government's swift action, saying it reflects their commitment to prioritizing education and uplifting the lives of learners, especially those in marginalized communities.

As we look ahead to 2025, ensuring every school has a principal should be a priority. By providing quality education, we can empower the next generation of entrepreneurs, innovators, and leaders.

Enjoy the little things in life. For one day, you may look back and realize they were the big things. Many of life's failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.
