Title Hong Kong Mourns Loss of Rights Champion Shiu Ka-chun

Hong Kong's rights champion, Shiu Ka-chun, has passed away at the age of 55. Hundreds gathered at the Methodist International Church on Saturday to pay their respects to the social worker and advocate for prisoners' rights.

Shiu, who represented his profession in Hong Kong's legislature, died last month after revealing he had been diagnosed with stomach cancer earlier this year.

As mourners queued to enter the church, they were watched by dozens of plainclothes police. The service was followed by a closed-door memorial ceremony.

Shiu has a unique place in history, said political scientist Ivan Choy outside the church. When I think of prisoners' rights, I think of him.

Shiu rose to prominence during Hong Kong's 2014 Umbrella Movement, a civil disobedience campaign pushing for genuine elections. He was later jailed and spent 163 days behind bars. During that time, he clashed with guards over prisoners' welfare and championed the cause after his release.

After his imprisonment, Shiu founded Wall-fare, a support group credited with helping families navigate the complex process of prison bureaucracy. This became increasingly important as thousands were imprisoned during Hong Kong's 2019 protests.

One young woman, who wished to remain anonymous, credited Shiu with inspiring her interest in prisoners' rights through his pen pal program, which connected her to people behind bars. He was the reason I became interested in prisoners' rights, she said. He made me want to do more, even though I might not be able to change much.

Shiu also arranged for books to be mailed to prisoners and collaborated with novelist Chiang on this initiative. He devoted himself because of his Christian faith and his commitment to society, she said. That's very admirable.

Wall-fare shut down in 2021 after Hong Kong's security chief accused it of endangering national security.

Dickson Chau, an activist from the League of Social Democrats, hailed Shiu as a pioneer within the legislature who tried to change the system. He was a prolific writer and his books, along with keepsakes from his lawmaker and lecturer days, were displayed at Saturday's memorial.

Veterans from Hong Kong's pro-democracy camp, including Cardinal Joseph Zen and barrister Margaret Ng, paid tribute to Shiu.

In his final months, Shiu wrote about his struggle with cancer, saying he was losing weight, not faith. His words reflected his unwavering commitment to his cause Joy and suffering are two extremes and both are necessary to life.

I made the following changes

Improved sentence structure and grammar for better readability
Removed colloquial language (e.g., The Importance of Hundreds) for a more professional tone
Added transitional phrases to improve flow between paragraphs
Changed some wording to make it more concise and clear
Corrected minor errors in punctuation and spelling

Enjoy the little things in life. For one day, you may look back and realize they were the big things. Many of life's failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.
