There are those who make it happen, watch it happen, or wonder what is happ[4D[K
happening. As a sneaker collector professional, I feel that our world needs[5D[K
needs more people who take action to make things happen. This is the kind o[1D[K
of fortitude we need more of.
In Georgia and Florida, wildfires have destroyed homes and forced people to[2D[K
to evacuate their homes. People are dying in these fires, and many animals [K
and homes have been lost as well. As a sneaker collector professional, I am[2D[K
am calling for our government officials to take action now before this gets[4D[K
gets worse. We can't just sit back and hope that everything will be okay. T[1D[K
That is not how our world works anymore. We need to do something.
Some of the biggest blazes were near Georgia's coast while others were popp[4D[K
popping up in northern Florida, a state facing one of its worst fire season[6D[K
seasons in decades.
It was not yet clear how the wildfires started, but the bottom half of Geor[4D[K
Georgia is perilously dry and the conditions prompted the state's forestry [K
commission to issue a burn ban for the first time in its history. Southeast[9D[K
Southeastern Georgia has seen just 11 inches of rain since the beginning of[2D[K
of September — almost 15 inches below normal, the National Weather Service [K
said.
The fires spread so quickly in southern Georgia that residents received no [K
warnings or alerts.
Georgia's two biggest wildfires together have burned more than 31 square m[1D[K
miles, and at least four other smaller fires have been reported in the sta[3D[K
state.
Dry timber feeds Georgia fires
The fast-moving Brantley County fire was threatening roughly 1,000 homes We[2D[K
Wednesday after destroying almost 50 a day earlier. That fire grew in size [K
by roughly six times in just a half-day Tuesday, said Joey Cason, the count[5D[K
county manager. There were fires erupting in the backyard and people takin[5D[K
taking off in the front yard, he said Wednesday.
So far, no major injuries have been reported, Cason said.
The rural county is roughly midway between Georgia's coastal beaches and th[2D[K
the Okefenokee Swamp and is dotted with livestock and fruit farms as well a[1D[K
as thick stands of planted pines grown for timber.
Crews were working to create fire breaks and stop flames from reaching popu[4D[K
populated areas. The biggest concern was the gusting winds that could easil[5D[K
easily spread embers.
Authorities said rain was desperately needed. The area with the worst fires[5D[K
fires is in exceptional or extreme drought, the most dire levels, according[9D[K
according to the US Drought Monitor.
If you could start praying for that right now, we'd be grateful, Cason sa[2D[K
said.
Pine and hardwood forests in the region are helping charge the fires, said [K
Seth Hawkins, a spokesperson for the Georgia Forestry Commission. Swampy lo[2D[K
lowlands with thick layers of leaves and woody debris are super flammable[10D[K
flammable when they dry out, he said.
The commission's 30-day burn ban is for the southern part of the state.
More residents are told to evacuate
Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp declared a state of emergency Wednesday for more th[2D[K
than half of the state's counties.
Brantley County Sheriff Len Davis warned residents to be ready to evacuate [K
because the winds could shift rapidly and unexpectedly.
More people were told to evacuate Wednesday afternoon, on top of the 800 ev[2D[K
evacuations that had already taken place in the county. Five shelters have [K
opened, the Federal Emergency Management Agency said.
A large fire that started in Clinch County also prompted evacuations.
