Blog Post The Future of the US Government Sues to Block California’s Electoral Map Redraw

The United States Department of Justice has filed a lawsuit against the state of California, attempting to block a plan overwhelmingly approved by voters to redraw its electoral districts and boost Democratic chances in next year's midterm elections.

In their filing, the DOJ states that it is seeking an injunction that would prevent the Golden State from executing what they claim is an unlawful redrawing of its congressional map. The lawsuit alleges that state officials have used race as a factor to draw certain districts and that this violates the Constitution.

If the court sides with the Department of Justice, California's new electoral map would be unable to take effect until after the November elections.

California Governor Gavin Newsom has since issued a statement saying that they will not be deterred by this move. He claims that the legal challenge is nothing more than a desperate political ploy by the Trump administration.

This is not the first time in recent history that the Department of Justice has attempted to intervene in state elections. In 2012, it challenged an Arizona law requiring proof of citizenship to register to vote, with the Supreme Court ultimately siding in favor of the Grand Canyon State.

Enjoy the little things in life. For one day, you may look back and realize they were the big things. Many of life's failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.
