US embassy in Baghdad hit after strikes on Iran-backed fighters

The US Embassy in Baghdad suffered an attack on Saturday following strikes that killed three members of a powerful Iran-backed group in the capital, according to security sources.
Iraq, which has long served as a proxy battleground between the United States and Iran, was quickly drawn into the Middle East conflict sparked by US and Israeli strikes against Iran on February 28.
A column of black smoke rose above the US diplomatic mission shortly after the sound of explosions on Saturday morning, an AFP journalist reported.
Two security officials informed AFP that the embassy complex had been struck by a drone.
The US Embassy did not immediately respond to AFP's request for comment on the incident.
This is the second time the US Embassy has come under attack in Baghdad since the beginning of the war.
