BOCA DEL RIO, Mexico - Petgas, a pioneering startup in Mexico, has revolutionized the approach to plastic waste by converting it into gasoline, diesel, and other fuels through pyrolysis, a thermodynamic process that breaks down plastics in the absence of oxygen. This innovative solution tackles the pressing issue of plastic pollution head-on.

The company's machine can process up to 1.5 tons of plastics per week, producing 356 gallons (1,350 liters) of fuel. Not only does this significantly reduce waste, but it also provides a sustainable alternative to traditional fossil fuels.

Petgas' vision for a circular economy, where plastic is no longer waste but rather a resource for energy production, is a step in the right direction. The company has organized plastic collection drives and encourages people to bring their plastic waste to designated drop-off points, ensuring that most materials are clean and shredded from recyclers.

For now, Petgas donates its fuel products to local fire departments and food delivery services. However, the company's long-term goal is to scale up production and make a significant impact on the environment. As Chief Technology Officer Carlos Parraguirre Díaz says, The future is being able to really take production to a scale that has impact.
