The World Health Organization is calling on the United States to maintain funding for HIV treatment programs. The request comes after President Trump ordered a freeze on foreign aid. The UN health body expressed deep concern over the funding pause and urged the US government to enable additional exemptions to ensure the delivery of lifesaving HIV treatment and care.Trump has criticized the WHO's handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, leading him to sign an executive order directing the United States to withdraw from the organization. In response, the WHO said it was reviewing its priorities ahead of the withdrawal of the United States as a donor.The agency stated that its programs provided access to life-saving HIV therapy to more than 30 million people worldwide. It warned that if prolonged, the US funding cuts could lead to rises in new infections and deaths, reversing decades of progress and potentially taking the world back to the 1980s and 1990s when millions died of HIV every year globally, including many in the United States of America.The WHO said it was committed to working with partners to ensure that life-saving services continue uninterrupted. It called on all donors to contribute generously to maintain progress made in controlling the spread of HIV.
