The Importance of Indonesia deforestation rises again in 2024The deforestation rate in Indonesia increased for the third year running, according to a local environmental NGO. Based on satellite image analysis and fieldwork, Auriga Nusantara reported that 261,575 hectares of primary and secondary forests across Indonesia were lost in 2024. This is over four thousand more than the previous year. One of the world's highest rates of deforestation, Indonesia has key drivers including timber plantations, palm oil cultivation, and the mining of critical minerals. Its rainforests are some of the most biodiverse and provide critical habitats for threatened and endangered species and are also key carbon sinks. The report states that the majority of losses took place in areas opened for development by the government. Auriga Nusantara's chairman Timer Manurung has called for urgent protection of forests, especially in Kalimantan and Sulawesi, which have recorded the highest losses. As Indonesian environmentalists raise alarm over government plans to convert millions of hectares of forest for food and energy use, this report comes at a crucial time. President Prabowo Subianto assumed office in October and has pledged to boost food and energy self-sufficiency, including by expanding bio-based fuels to lower fuel imports.Environmental groups warn that the plans would spell disaster for the country's forests. Auriga Nusantara has urged President Subianto to issue a presidential regulation to protect all remaining natural forest.
