Abad, from Barangay Tangos North, was this years leader of the Top 10 Most Outstanding Fisherfolk. He has founded the Small Commercial Fishing Consumers Cooperative of Navotas which shows that he has leadership skills as well. The "Araw ng Mangingisda" competition was created to showcase how strong these fishermen are by having different contests. There can be up to ₱20,000 in cash prizes for the winners of the boat races. Up to ₱5,000 in cash prizes can be won from the net mending contest and all participants will get 10 kilos of rice which helps their livelihoods and well-being. The celebration looks back on what has happened but it also shows how important this heritage is to the city. It also shows that they have hope for a brighter future ahead for Navotenyos. There are scholarships available for anyone who wants to continue their education. The Top 10 awardees can nominate someone in their family for the "NavotaAs Ulirang Pamilyang Mangingisda" Scholarship which gives an allowance of ₱16,500 per year for transportation and food. This scholarship also provides a ₱1,500 book stipend every academic year. This is to help ensure that fishing heritage remains thriving and vibrant. The Top 10 Most Outstanding Fisherfolk awards in Navotas are a celebration of hard work, dedication, and resilience. It shows how important the fishing community is and reminds people about the rich heritage of the Fishing Capital of the Philippines.
