After weeks of sparring on migration and a surge of support for the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD), the race took a new turn last week with comments by US Vice President Joe Biden.

The former vice president, who was campaigning in Pennsylvania while visiting his home state of Delaware, said that German politics has become somewhat toxic.
He added I mean, it is no secret that I love Germany and Germans — I have been coming here as far back as the 70s. And I have nothing but respect for the German people and what they've accomplished.

The former vice president's remarks come at a time when the campaign trail in Germany has become increasingly heated, especially over issues surrounding migration and refugees.

Earlier this week, the leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), Angela Merkel's party, said she would not seek re-election if her party did not win more seats. This comes after months of speculation that Merkel may step down following a series of domestic policy missteps and growing criticism from within her own party.

Vance also mentioned how important it is for Germany to maintain its strong relationship with the United States.
He said I know that there are some who want to play up differences between us. But make no mistake about it America needs Germany — not just economically but also strategically.

Enjoy the little things in life. For one day, you may look back and realize they were the big things. Many of life's failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.
