In fact their tongues contain
only two types of papillae
small bumps instead of the
five found in human tongues
These papillae are designed
specifically for detecting
salty sour bitter and umami
flavors but not sweet This
means that when we try to
tempt our cats with sweet
treats theyre essentially
tasting nothing at allIts like
trying to get a cat to do
tricks for something that
smells like rainwater says Dr
Julie Nielsen a veterinarian
and animal behaviorist They
just wont botherSo why are
cats so uninterested in
sweetness Its likely because
their ancestors didnt need to
worry about sweet treats to
survive In the wild cats
primarily fed on small prey
and carrion which provided all
the nutrients they needed
Sugar wasnt part of the
equationIn a quip thats sure

Cats are like the grumpy old
men of the animal kingdom
they dont care about anything
thats not essential to their
survivalOf course this doesnt
mean you cant try to entice
your feline friend with sweet
treats although lets be real
its a lost cause But if your
cat isnt interested in licking
up that sugarladen snack dont
worry theyre just being true
to their natureAfter all as
the saying goes cats have
staff and when it comes to
sweetness that staff is
definitely not sweet on it
