The Philippines as a flourishing society

Title The Philippines A Flourishing Society's Secret to Success
As I hosted an American woman on a month-long sabbatical in the Philippines[11D[K
Philippines, she revealed her fascination with our culture. As the presiden[8D[K
president of a mental health institution in the US, she was driven by curio[5D[K
curiosity – almost a quiet investigation – to understand what makes the Phi[3D[K
Philippines a flourishing society.
Her inquiry led us to a report released in 2025 by the Global Flourishing S[1D[K
Study, a major international collaboration among researchers at Harvard Uni[3D[K
University, Baylor University's Institute for Studies of Religion, and Gall[4D[K
Gallup. The study aimed to answer humanity's oldest question What does it [K
mean to have a life well-lived?
The researchers focused on human flourishing, defined as the relative attai[5D[K
attainment of a state in which all aspects of a person's life are good, inc[3D[K
including their environment and communities. They measured flourishing acro[4D[K
across six domains happiness and life satisfaction; mental and physical he[2D[K
health; meaning and purpose; character and virtue; close social relationshi[11D[K
relationships; and financial and material stability.
The scope of the project was extraordinary – over 207,000 participants acro[4D[K
across 22 countries and Hong Kong, representing roughly 64% of the world. W[1D[K
When the results were released, one detail stood out among all the countri[7D[K
countries studied, the Philippines ranked high in human flourishing, alongs[6D[K
alongside Indonesia and Mexico.
As we explored the reasons behind this phenomenon, my guest asked me, How [K
does a country facing many economic challenges still rank among the most fl[2D[K
flourishing societies in the world? The answer lies in our culture's deepl[5D[K
deeply rooted concept of kapwa – recognizing that we share a common identit[7D[K
identity with others. It's the belief that we are not separate from one ano[3D[K
another but fundamentally connected.
In daily life, you see this connection everywhere – in neighbors caring for[3D[K
for each other, families welcoming guests with openness, and instinctive ge[2D[K
generosity appearing even in communities with little material wealth. In a [K
world that increasingly measures success through wealth, productivity, and [K
status, the Philippines offers a different perspective on what a life well-[5D[K
well-lived might look like.
Sometimes, flourishing is not about having the most but simply about having[6D[K
having each other. As I reflected on my own experience moving back to the P[1D[K
Philippines, I realized that community was something I had taken for grante[6D[K
granted. Within a short time, I formed friendships that went beyond casual [K
social circles – they became part of my life in a deeper way.
I met their families, attended birthdays and weddings, and even experienced[11D[K
experienced difficult moments with genuine care. There was a shared underst[7D[K
understanding that life is something we move through together. As the world[5D[K
world continues to evolve, it's essential to recognize the value of human c[1D[K
connection in fostering flourishing societies like ours.
The Philippines' secret to success lies not in material wealth or external [K
markers of success but in its people's deep-seated understanding of kapwa. [K
This concept has allowed us to build strong communities and foster a sense [K
of belonging that transcends individual pursuits. As we move forward, it's [K
crucial to acknowledge the importance of human connection in achieving true[4D[K
true flourishing.
