Title Tamayo Taps Cariño as Altas Coach A New Era Begins

The University of Perpetual Help System Dalta (UPHSD) has announced a significant change in its men's volleyball team, Altas. UPHSD Chairman Antonio Tamayo has appointed Micheal Cariño, the team's first assistant coach, as the new head coach following the passing of legendary coach Sinfronio 'Sammy' Acaylar.

Acaylar, who led Perpetual Help to 14 NCAA men's volleyball championships, passed away on Thursday due to cardiac arrest. In his honor, Tamayo announced Cariño's appointment during a visit to Acaylar's wake at the Perpetual Chapel on Monday.

As interim head coach, Cariño will lead the team into the upcoming NCAA Season 100 men's volleyball tournament, set to begin on February 20, 2025. Tamayo is confident that Cariño can continue the team's winning tradition and potentially lead them to their fifth consecutive title.

There is no one else who should succeed Coach Sammy, Tamayo said. Nobody but Coach Macky, who has been his long-time deputy since 2010.

Cariño expressed gratitude for the trust placed in him and vowed to carry on Acaylar's legacy. It's an honor to be a successor of Coach Sammy, and we will do our very best to continue the legacy and make this season count, he said.

As Cariño takes the reins, he is scheduled to deliver a eulogy at the necrological rites for Acaylar on Tuesday. The ceremony will feature speeches from UPHSD President Anthony Tamayo, Vice President for Sports Anton Tamayo, and Alumni Affairs Head Liwi Elizares, as well as former players Imus City Administrator Tito Monzon and Cignal HD head coach Dexter Clamor.

The appointment of Cariño marks the beginning of a new era for Perpetual Help volleyball. Fans are eagerly anticipating what's to come under his leadership. Can he lead the team to more championships? Only time will tell, but one thing is certain – the legacy of Sammy Acaylar will continue to inspire and motivate the players and coaches at UPHSD.

Enjoy the little things in life. For one day, you may look back and realize they were the big things. Many of life's failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.
