Taiwan Air Force Grounds Training Jets After Crash Safety Checks Underway

The Taiwanese air force has taken swift action to prioritize safety after one of its locally-made Brave Eagle jet trainers crashed on Saturday. The incident, which occurred shortly after takeoff from Chih Hang Air Base in southern Taitung county, resulted in the pilot ejecting safely and sustaining no injuries.

According to an official statement, the crash was caused by dual engine failure. In response, a special task force has been established to investigate the incident, determine its cause, and ensure that training safety measures are in place to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future. As part of these efforts, all Brave Eagle advanced jet trainers (AJT) have been grounded for comprehensive safety checks.

The crash is a significant event for Taiwan's military, which has been upgrading its equipment and capabilities in recent years. With a homegrown defense industry and reliance on US arms sales, Taiwan is bolstering its security capabilities against the potential threat of Chinese aggression. China claims Taiwan as part of its territory and has threatened to use force to bring it under its control.

The Brave Eagle jet trainer, manufactured by Taiwan's Aerospace Industrial Development Corp, had its first test flight in 2020. The pilot involved in the crash had accumulated 183 flying hours, according to the air force.

This incident is not an isolated one; last September, Taiwan temporarily grounded its fleet of Mirage 2000 fighters for safety checks after a jet crashed into the sea. The Mirage 2000 fighters were purchased from France in 1992 and remain a core component of Taiwan's ageing fleet, which also includes F16 fighter jets from the United States and locally built Indigenous Defense Fighters.

Under pressure from China, Taiwan's military is facing increasing challenges. China has been ramping up incursions by fighter jets and warships around the island, with grey-zone tactics designed to exhaust the island's armed forces and render them less effective in responding to any potential Chinese aggression.

In the 24-hour period ending Saturday morning, 19 Chinese military aircraft, eight naval vessels, one official ship, and one balloon were detected around the island, according to Taiwan's defense ministry. In light of these developments, leader Lai Ching-te has called on the opposition-controlled parliament to remedy sections of the defense budget that have been frozen or cut in order to show full support for the military.

The grounding of training jets is a necessary measure to ensure the safety of pilots and aircraft. As Taiwan's military continues to face pressure from China, it is essential that it prioritizes safety and takes all necessary measures to prevent similar incidents from occurring.

Enjoy the little things in life. For one day, you may look back and realize they were the big things. Many of life's failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.
