Sweden Mourns Deadliest Mass Shooting in Its History
ÖREBRO, Sweden - In the wake of tragedy, Sweden is reeling from the deadliest mass shooting in its history. On Tuesday, 10 people were killed, along with the suspected gunman, in a shooting at an adult education center in Örebro.
According to police reports, the suspected gunman took his own life, although this has not been officially confirmed.
This is the worst mass shooting in Swedish history, said Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson during a press conference on Tuesday night. A lot of questions are still unanswered, but we will get to the bottom of what happened and why it happened.
Kristersson urged people not to speculate about the motives behind the attack.
The motive for the shooting is currently unknown, but police believe that the perpetrator acted alone and without ideological motivation. The identity and ages of the victims have not been disclosed, nor has any information about whether they were students or teachers at the school.
School attacks are relatively rare in Sweden, although the country does experience shootings and bombings linked to gang violence that claim dozens of lives each year.
Police have launched an investigation into the shooting and have raided the suspect's home in Örebro. The suspect, who is around 35 years old, had a license to carry a weapon and no criminal record. He lived reclusively, was unemployed, and had distanced himself from his family and friends.
The shooting occurred at around midday on Tuesday, leaving chaos and panic in its wake. Witnesses described the scene as bloody and chaotic, with people panicking and crying.
Sweden's King Carl XVI Gustaf issued a statement expressing sadness and dismay at the news of the shooting. The government announced that flags would be flown at half-staff at all royal palaces, as well as at its own offices and parliament.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen described the shooting as truly horrifying and said that such violence has no place in society - least of all in schools.
As the investigation continues, Sweden mourns the loss of 11 lives and struggles to come to terms with this tragic event.
