Seoul says N Korea fired 'unidentified projectile' Tuesday

North Korea fired an unidentified projectile into the sea off its east c[1D[K
coast Tuesday, South Korea's military said, in what appeared to be another [K
provocation by Pyongyang as the U.S. Navy gets ready to hold drills with So[2D[K
South Korean and Japanese forces in the area.
The launch follows a ballistic missile test carried out by North Korea on S[1D[K
Sunday that flew higher and farther than any previous such weapon tested by[2D[K
by the country, according to analysts.
South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said it detected what appeared to be an[2D[K
another projectile Tuesday morning from the same region along the country's[9D[K
country's east coast where an unidentified projectile was launched Sunday. [K
It described the latest launch as suspected because the type and range wa[2D[K
wasn't immediately known.
The launch came two days after North Korea flew a newly developed cruise mi[2D[K
missile, according to South Korean officials and state media reports.
North Korea has launched dozens of missiles into the sea over the past year[4D[K
year in an effort to modernize its weapons arsenal. The country carried out[3D[K
out 11 rounds of ballistic missile tests in 2021 alone, including the launc[5D[K
launch of its first intercontinental ballistic missile since 2017.
The launches come amid a flurry of diplomatic activity aimed at restarting [K
talks between Washington and Pyongyang on North Korea's nuclear program. U.[2D[K
U.S. special representative for North Korea Sung Kim held separate meetings[8D[K
meetings with his Japanese and South Korean counterparts in Tokyo this week[4D[K
week in an effort to coordinate approaches to the North.
A senior U.S. official said Monday that North Korea has shown no interest i[1D[K
in resuming dialogue with the United States, but was instead trying to impr[4D[K
improve its negotiating position. The official wasn't authorized to be name[4D[K
named, discussing internal deliberations.
The U.S., Japan and South Korea have scheduled a military drill called Eagl[4D[K
Eagle Alert from Tuesday through Thursday, which South Korean officials say[3D[K
say will involve the USS Ronald Reagan aircraft carrier, a naval destroyer [K
and a guided-missile cruiser.
North Korea had previously threatened to respond if the U.S. goes ahead wit[3D[K
with the planned military drills.
U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is also following developments in N[1D[K
North Korea with great concern, spokesman Stephane Dujarric said Tuesday,[8D[K
Tuesday, adding that Guterres believes that a return to dialogue is essent[6D[K
essential and that Guterres urges all parties to engage in a meaningful d[1D[K
dialogue as soon as possible.
