Myanmar's Aung San Suu Kyi, who was ousted by a military coup last year an[2D[K
and faces charges herself, was also named as a defendant. The plaintiffs ar[2D[K
are seeking compensatory and punitive damages for crimes against humanity.
The complaint is the first of its kind to be filed in Indonesia, which has [K
a universal jurisdiction law that allows it to try cases involving genocide[8D[K
genocide or torture regardless of where they occurred.
Yasmin Ullah told reporters on Wednesday that she was hopeful that Indone[6D[K
Indonesia's attorney general would take up the case but added that if they [K
didn't, the Rohingya community had no choice but to fight for justice.
We're hopeful that we will see a case in court. If not, then unfortunately[13D[K
unfortunately, this is not just about accountability and seeking reparation[10D[K
reparations, she said. This has to go all the way through. We have no cho[3D[K
choice. It's what we have to do.
Ullah, who was born in Bangladesh but whose parents are Rohingya refugees f[1D[K
from Myanmar, also called on ASEAN member states and the Muslim world to op[2D[K
oppose Myanmar's military junta.
ASEAN is an organization of countries that represents half a billion Musli[5D[K
Muslims in Asia, she said. And the fact that they continue to sit around [K
this table with murderers is quite abhorrent.
She described the situation in Myanmar as dire, saying the junta has blocke[6D[K
blocked humanitarian aid to displaced Rohingya Muslims.
The world does not know the extent of what's happening, she said. Women [K
and children are being raped on a daily basis. People are being shot dead a[1D[K
and killed for no reason.
