Rekindling the Bromance Modi's US Visit Hopes to Woo Trump

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to arrive in Washington, D.C., with the aim of reinvigorating his bond with former U.S. President Donald Trump. The two leaders have a history of shared connections, with Modi having gone out of his way to curry favor with Trump during his presidency.

Modi's efforts come as a response to Trump's previous criticism of India over trade issues. In an attempt to avoid any negative repercussions, India has already taken steps to address these concerns, including slashing duties on high-end motorcycles – a boost for Harley-Davidson, an iconic American company that Trump has shown interest in.

Lisa Curtis, former Director on South Asia at the National Security Council, believes that Modi has done his homework and is seeking to preempt any potential anger from Trump. Modi has prepared for this visit, and he is seeking to set a positive tone, she said.

Beyond addressing trade issues, Modi's visit also aims to build on their shared values of promoting national interests. Both leaders have been known to prioritize the interests of their respective majority communities over minority groups.

During his first term, Modi assiduously courted Trump, sharing many commonalities with him. They both campaigned on promises to promote the interests of their countries' majority communities and both shifted long-held democratic norms by pursuing critics.

In 2020, Modi even invited Trump to inaugurate the world's largest cricket stadium in his home state of Gujarat, which was later renamed after the prime minister himself. This remains the last presidential trip made overseas by Trump before the coronavirus pandemic grounded him.

Aparna Pande, a fellow at the Hudson Institute, believes that Modi and his advisors hope to recreate their bonhomie with Trump to ensure India avoids any negative trade-related actions or sanctions. India remains one of the few countries that retains bipartisan support across the aisle in the U.S., she said.

Modi's visit comes as the Quad – a four-way grouping of Australia, India, Japan, and the US – is scheduled to hold its next summit later this year. This would mean another visit from Trump to India, potentially rekindling their bromance.

In conclusion, Modi's visit aims to reinvigorate his bond with Trump by addressing trade issues, promoting national interests, and building on their shared values. As the Quad summit approaches, it will be interesting to see how their relationship evolves in the coming months.

Enjoy the little things in life. For one day, you may look back and realize they were the big things. Many of life's failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.
