Title Rain or Shine Coaches on High Hopes as 11-Day Break Arrives
As Rain or Shine wraps up their first win in the PBA Philippine Cup, Coach Yeng Guiao can't help but feel optimistic about the team's prospects. The Elasto Painters' thrilling 113-96 victory over NorthPort Batang Pier on Holy Wednesday marks a turning point for the team, and Guiao hopes that an 11-day break will give them time to regroup and recharge.
Despite being without veteran big man Beau Belga and sophomore Keith Datu due to injuries, Rain or Shine showed impressive teamwork and rebounding prowess. The team dominated the boards, outrebounding NorthPort 66-54, and capitalized on second-chance opportunities with a 27-6 advantage in that category.
Guiao acknowledged the importance of this win, but also recognized that competing against stronger teams like San Miguel, TNT, Magnolia, and Meralco would be a different story. He hopes that Belga and Datu will have sufficient time to recover from their respective injuries – vertigo for Belga and a right calf strain for Datu – before returning to action.
We can compete to a certain level, but if you compete against San Miguel, Converge, Magnolia, and you need to match up against their big men, we will surely have a hard time against them because we don't have Beau and Keith, Guiao emphasized. This break comes at an opportune time for us to focus on our injured players' recovery.
In the absence of Belga and Datu, Gabe Norwood and Leonard Santillan stepped up, with Santillan delivering a solid performance with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
Rain or Shine will return to action on April 27 against defending champion Meralco at the Ynares Center. With this well-deserved break, Guiao hopes that his big men will be ready to take on the challenge once again.
