Subheading Government Announces Financial Assistance for Public Utility Vehicle Drivers in Metro Manila, with Plans to Expand to Other Areas

Public utility vehicle (PUV) drivers in Metro Manila and beyond may be pleased to learn that the government has introduced a P5,000 fuel subsidy to help cushion the impact of rising fuel prices caused by the ongoing crisis in the Middle East. This financial assistance is part of a broader effort to support vulnerable sectors affected by the war.

Starting Tuesday, March 17, eligible PUV drivers in Metro Manila will be able to receive the subsidy, with a nationwide rollout to follow. The move aims to alleviate the burden faced by jeepney, tricycle, and taxi operators, among others, who are struggling to cope with the increased fuel costs.

We will launch the program in Metro Manila first, and then roll it out to other areas. Our department has nationwide offices that can conduct simultaneous payouts, explained Social Welfare Secretary Rex Gatchalian.

According to Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) has been working closely with the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), local government units, and other stakeholders to implement the subsidy. The DOTr has also collaborated with the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB), the Department of Information and Communications Technology, and the Department of the Interior and Local Government to validate the list of beneficiaries.

How the Subsidy Will Work

The P5,000 fuel subsidy will be distributed under the agency's Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situations program, which has a budget of P62 billion. To receive the subsidy, PUV drivers will need to register with the DOTr and provide necessary documents, including their driver's license and proof of income. The cash aid will be paid directly to the drivers' bank accounts or through a cash payout at designated locations.

Additional Measures

The government has also announced several other measures to mitigate the impact of rising fuel prices

Possible tax adjustments on petroleum products
Fuel subsidies for other transportation modes, such as buses and trucks
Energy-saving steps across government offices

Furthermore, local chief executives nationwide have been asked to use their Local Government Support Fund (LGSF) to ease the burden on vulnerable sectors affected by the war in the Middle East.

Next Steps*

The government will continue to monitor the situation and adjust its measures as needed to minimize the impact of rising fuel prices. PUV drivers and other stakeholders are encouraged to provide feedback and suggestions to help shape the government's response.

In the meantime, PUV drivers in Metro Manila can expect to receive their P5,000 fuel subsidy starting Tuesday, March 17.

Enjoy the little things in life. For one day, you may look back and realize they were the big things. Many of life's failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.
