Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has won the most seats in elections for the lower house of India's parliament, known as the Lok Sabha. The BJP won 302 of the 542 seats in the election that ended Thursday. Its alliance partners won an additional 95 seats, giving it a commanding majority to rule the country without the support of other parties. The victory is seen as a mandate for Modi and his Hindu nationalist agenda. Modi's party also won control of 17 of India's 29 states in elections held over six months.
The BJP had campaigned on promises to create jobs, improve infrastructure, and crack down on corruption. It has tried to appeal to the country's young people by promoting initiatives such as a nationwide campaign to clean up roads and public spaces. The party also promised to repeal laws that discriminate against women and minorities if elected into power again.
In his victory speech, Modi thanked voters for their support and said that he would work hard to fulfill his promises. He said that the election was not just about winning seats but about fulfilling people's hopes and dreams. He added that he will continue to strive for making India a better place for all citizens regardless of their background or religion.
The opposition Congress party, which ruled India for much of its independent history until being ousted by the BJP in 2014, managed to win only 50 seats this time around. The party was plagued by internal feuding during the campaign period and suffered significant losses in several key states including Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh where it had previously held power.
The ruling party's victory comes at a critical juncture for India as it faces economic challenges such as high unemployment rates among young people while also dealing with political unrest caused by controversial citizenship laws that have angered Muslim communities across the country.
