Preserving the world's glaciers is not only important because they are crucial for sustaining life on Earth. Glaciers help clean water sources by filtering out sediments and toxins. They also serve as natural air conditioners. But now that the planet is warming, glaciers are retreating rapidly, which has a significant impact on global weather patterns. So we can say that preserving glaciers is not just an environmental or economic necessity but also essential for human survival.

The world's glaciers experienced mass shrinkage again in 2024, according to the United Nations. This marks the third consecutive year of net loss of mass for all 19 of the world's glacier regions. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO), a weather, climate and water agency of the UN, has warned that saving the planet's glaciers is now a matter of survival.

The last six years have witnessed the most rapid glacier retreat on record, with five of those years being in 2024 alone. The inaugural World Day for Glaciers was marked by this announcement.

According to Celeste Saulo, WMO chief Preservation of glaciers is not just an environmental, economic and societal necessity; it's a matter of survival.

Enjoy the little things in life. For one day, you may look back and realize they were the big things. Many of life's failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.
