Miracle in Madrid Potapova's Journey from Lucky Loser to WTA 1,000 Semif[5D[K
Semifinalist
As Anastasia Potapova knelt on the court, tears of joy streaming down her f[1D[K
face, it was clear that she had just achieved something truly remarkable. T[1D[K
The 56th-ranked Russian-born tennis player had become the first lucky lose[4D[K
loser to reach the semifinals of a WTA 1000-level event – a feat that woul[4D[K
would be remembered for years to come.
Potapova's journey began with a loss in the qualifying tournament, but afte[4D[K
after another player withdrew from the main draw, she received a chance to [K
compete as a lucky loser. And what a ride it turned out to be! With her boy[3D[K
boyfriend, Dutch tennis player Tallon Griekspoor, cheering her on, Potapova[8D[K
Potapova battled her way through the draws, including a thrilling victory o[1D[K
over former world No. 1 Karolina Pliskova.
In an interview, Potapova reflected on her win, saying, I had a few match [K
points in the second set, but I couldn't manage my nerves at that time. It [K
seems that this tournament keeps giving me second chances and I keep using [K
them. So yeah, super happy.
So what was behind Potapova's incredible run? She credited Griekspoor with [K
providing the mental boost she needed to push through the tough moments. I[2D[K
I was a little bit gone mentally in the third set, she admitted. But big[3D[K
big respect to my boyfriend who came just on time. He kept telling me, 'You[4D[K
'You can do this, we are all together here, just keep going.'
Potapova's victory over Pliskova marked her fourth consecutive win, includi[7D[K
including an impressive defeat of world No. 2 Elena Rybakina in the round o[1D[K
of 16. And as she looked to the future, Potapova was grateful for the lesso[5D[K
lessons she had learned along the way.
I didn't expect myself being in the draw again because at first they didn'[5D[K
didn't take my name as a lucky loser, she said. And then the days kept on[2D[K
on going and nobody was injured or pulling out. Then the last moment I got [K
the information, literally 30 minutes before the match, that I was given a [K
chance to step on court here again.
As Potapova prepares to face Marta Kostyuk in the semifinals, she knows tha[3D[K
that she has earned her spot through hard work and determination. And while[5D[K
while she may have started as an underdog, she is now a force to be reckone[7D[K
reckoned with.
It's pretty rare when you get the second chance and that you go almost all[3D[K
all the way, she said. But... I always say, if you got it, maybe you dese[4D[K
deserved it. I'm happy that I didn't waste it, and I was able to convert it[2D[K
it and to be here now.
As Potapova's story inspires tennis fans around the world, we can't help bu[2D[K
but wonder what the future holds for this talented young player. Will she c[1D[K
continue to defy the odds and achieve even greater heights? Only time will [K
tell.
