Pope Francis describes migrant deportations under President Trump as a major crisis
Pope Francis has described migrant deportations under President Trump as a major crisis and urged Catholics to help those seeking refuge in America. In a letter to US bishops, he said that the act of deporting people who have left their own land for reasons of extreme poverty, insecurity, exploitation, persecution or serious deterioration of the environment damages the dignity of many men and women, and of entire families. He added What is built on the basis of force, and not on the truth about the equal dignity of every human being, begins badly and will end badly.
The Pope's letter comes at a time when President Trump has been accused of pursuing hardline policies toward immigrants. Last month, he signed an executive order directing the Department of Homeland Security to begin implementing more stringent immigration rules. The order included plans for building a wall along the Mexican border and increasing penalties against those caught crossing it illegally.
However, despite these tough measures, Pope Francis believes that Trump's policy will not solve anything. In his letter, he wrote We must not turn our backs on our brothers and sisters who are in need. We can't simply build walls to keep them out; we have to help them find a way forward.
