The Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban), the political party founded by former President Rodrigo Duterte, has issued a statement condemning the impeachment of Vice President Sara Duterte by the House of Representatives.

In a strongly worded statement released on Thursday, PDP-Laban decried the House decision to impeach the vice president as the clearest manifestation of dirty politics in the country. The party expressed its extreme disgust and condemnation over what it described as a railroaded and sham impeachment of Duterte, who had received the most votes cast for a candidate in Philippine history just 18 months into her term.

PDP-Laban also pointed out that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. himself had urged the House to drop the impeachment complaint and address more pressing issues facing the country. The party suggested that the real motivation behind the impeachment was to undermine Vice President Duterte's chances of seeking higher office in 2028.

We call on voters to choose wisely on election day, May 12, PDP-Laban said. In particular, we urge citizens to elect senators who will stand up for Vice President Sara Duterte and defend her against this baseless and politically motivated attack.

Meanwhile, Akbayan Rep. Percival Cendaña criticized Vice President Duterte's remarks that the country should be saved from corruption and incompetence, saying that these words were ironic coming from a politician with a history of failing to protect public funds, education, and frontliners.

In a statement posted on Facebook, Cendaña said If anyone should be saying 'God save the Philippines,' it is the people suffering from her and her family's corruption, incompetence, and impunity. Instead of invoking God to evade responsibility, Vice President Duterte must answer for the millions in confidential funds, her failure to stand against China's aggression, and her lack of compassion for Filipinos in crisis.

Former Senator Leila de Lima questioned whether the Senate was ready to try Sara Duterte, citing concerns about delays in the impeachment trial.

The Constitution mandates that the trial must begin immediately after the filing of articles of impeachment, De Lima said. Delaying this is like nullifying the impeachment by the House of Representatives. The real issue still is delay by the Senate. Simply inexcusable and can be considered a culpable violation of the Constitutional directive to 'forthwith' start the trial.
