Original Article The city of Navotas is proud to be called the "Fishing Capital of the Philippines." The municipality has honored its fishermen by choosing their best. Mayor John Rey Tiangco led other officials from the city, including his brother Tobias Tiangco, in a ceremony for the top 10 outstanding fishermen. They were praised for being dedicated and perseverant. According to Mayor Tiangco, "You are the reason why our city was known to be the 'Fishing Capital of the Philippines.' This day, we celebrate and honor you all for your sacrifices to your family and your community." The winner is Renato C. Abad, who lives in Barangay Tangos North. He has been fishing since he was 15 years old. Abad overcame his humble beginnings and had great success supporting a family of six and three children graduating from college. He also founded the Small Commercial Fishing Consumers Cooperative of Navotas. The city government states that "His success goes beyond personal achievement, serving as a testament to the boundless opportunities borne out of hard work and innovation in the fishing industry."
