SEOUL — In a New Year's message praised by state media, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un hailed his troops fighting abroad as forging an invincible alliance with Russia. According to South Korean and Western intelligence agencies, Pyongyang has sent thousands of troops to support Russia's nearly four-year invasion of Ukraine.
Estimates from South Korea indicate that at least 600 soldiers have died and thousands more have sustained injuries in their efforts overseas.
Analysts say North Korea is receiving financial aid, military technology, and food and energy supplies from Russia in return for its assistance. In his message, Kim congratulated the troops for defending the nation's honor heroically and instructed them to be brave.
Kim expressed missing those fighting on the battlefields while the country celebrated the new year and praised soldiers for strengthening the invincible alliance with Russia.
