The fatal accident at a gold mine in southern Mali has killed at least 48 individuals, authorities said on Sunday.
The disaster occurred late Friday at the open-cast mine in Morila, which is run by Canada-based company SEMAFO. The mine had been shuttered for nearly two years when the incident happened.
At least four people were injured and have been taken to hospital, the government of Mali's southern region said on Facebook. One of the wounded has since died, according to a statement from the government.
The cause of the accident was not immediately clear.
Mali is one of Africa's biggest gold producers. Artisanal miners – those who operate informally without official permits – often work in dangerous conditions and use crude techniques like mercury amalgamation to extract gold.
SEMFO said Saturday that it was working with local authorities on the tragic accident.
We are shocked and deeply saddened by this tragic event, the company said, adding that its priority now is to support those affected.
The United Nations' mission in Mali sent condolences to the families of the victims, while also calling for an investigation into the cause of the accident.
