Myanmar's military regime and a rebel ethnic group have reached an agreement to end hostilities in a conflict-ridden area of the country. The deal was brokered by Beijing following several rounds of China-mediated talks between the two parties.
The agreement, announced on Thursday, calls for a ceasefire and the beginning of peace negotiations in the troubled region of Kayin State. This is seen as a crucial step toward resolving the complex web of conflicts that have plagued Myanmar since the military seized power last February.
