Musk's aide given payment system access by mistake
Tesla CEO Elon Musk has made headlines recently after one of his employees gave him access to the company's sensitive payment systems without authorization.
The incident was first reported by Reuters, which spoke to two sources familiar with the situation. The news agency did not identify the employee or say whether they had been reprimanded or fired.
One source told Reuters that Musk was given full access to the system and could have seen everything. That person said it's not clear why the access was granted, adding that such a move would be highly unusual.
A Tesla spokesperson declined to comment when contacted by CNBC.
The mistake highlights the difficulties facing companies like Tesla as they race to develop self-driving cars. These vehicles will rely heavily on complex sensor and software systems, making them vulnerable to cyber attacks.
Musk has been vocal about his concerns over hacking threats, warning that fully autonomous vehicles are very close to reality and must be secure from malicious actors who could cause accidents or even steal sensitive data stored onboard the car.
In December 2016, he claimed that hackers could potentially gain control of a Tesla vehicle's functions via Bluetooth. He later clarified that statement, saying it was possible but unlikely.
Musk has also touted his company's commitment to cybersecurity. Last year, he announced plans for an online cybersecurity academy designed to train law enforcement officers around the world on how to investigate and respond quickly when faced with cyber threats against critical infrastructure networks like power grids or transport systems powered by electricity generated from renewable energy sources like wind turbines & solar panels etc..
