VIENNA, Austria – The trend of combining knitting and movies has caught on in Vienna. Every month, dexterous moviegoers gather at a cinema to indulge in their favorite hobbies knits and flicks.

The rise of knitting and crochet as popular pastimes during the COVID-19 pandemic has led many enthusiasts to seek out real-life connections with like-minded crafty individuals. Vienna's Votiv Kino has answered this call by introducing monthly knitting nights, a concept pioneered by Nordic countries and already popular in the US.

We saw that it exists in various European countries and wanted to bring it to Austria, said Luisa Palmer, an avid knitter who initiated the knitting nights at the Votiv Kino with a colleague. Since its launch in December, the monthly events have sold out, drawing almost 180 visitors each time.

During the latest event, attendees gathered in a cinema lounge while watching The Devil Wears Prada. With only slight dimming of the lights, knitters and crocheters worked on their projects, chatting and socializing with fellow craft enthusiasts. Alexander Koch, 28, quipped, It's a bit 'grannycore,' but I find it very calming and pleasant. Why not let out your inner granny?

Kaja Vospernik, a 23-year-old fashion student, was excited to meet others who shared her passion for knitting. She noted, I really enjoy knitting while watching movies or listening to podcasts, so the cinema is a great place for that.

For Palmer and her colleagues, the goal of these events is not only to bring people together but also to create a sense of community among crafty individuals. As she explained, A lot of people started knitting and crocheting during the pandemic and out of necessity, only did it at home alone. That's why a lot of people now want to do it with others.

The Votiv Kino's crafting community has grown significantly, with an estimated 1,000 crafty individuals in Vienna, according to Judith Hasloewer, who co-initiated the event. This diverse group is open to all age groups and encourages collaboration.

Cozy films that you have already seen are perfect for knitting, Palmer added. The cinema's knitting nights offer a unique setting where enthusiasts can connect with others while working on their projects.

For some, crafting represents a bold statement against fast fashion, as it allows individuals to create something with their own hands. As Hasloewer, 27, noted, Crafting your own garment slows you down and connects you to reality.

The Votiv Kino has added the knitting nights to its special shows, which include cinema breakfasts and screenings for parents and their babies. According to Lisa Stolze, the cinema's spokeswoman, these events are designed to appeal to the different interests of their audience.

Enjoy the little things in life. For one day, you may look back and realize they were the big things. Many of life's failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.
