Kim Jong Un Criticizes U.S.-South Korea-Japan Partnership, Vows to Bolster Nuclear Program

SEOUL, South Korea — North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has expressed deep concern about the newly formed U.S.-South Korea-Japan security alliance. He believes it is a serious threat to his country and that he will need to increase his nuclear weapons program.

In an address marking the 77th anniversary of the Korean People's Army, Kim said this trilateral partnership was established by the United States as part of their effort to build a NATO-like military bloc in the region. It invites further military imbalance on the Korean Peninsula and poses a grave challenge to the security environment of our state, according to the official Korean Central News Agency.

Kim has previously expressed his concerns about U.S.-South Korea joint military exercises, which he views as preparations for an invasion. In response to these exercises and North Korea's nuclear program, South Korea and the United States have expanded their own bilateral training, including training that involves Japan. North Korea has criticized these drills and responded with weapons testing.

Trump has offered to meet with Kim again since his inauguration in January of this year. During a joint news conference with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba on Friday, Trump said he would be reaching out to Kim again. He stated that We will have relations with North Korea, with Kim Jong Un, and that they got along well during their first meeting.

Trump met with Kim three times in 2018-19 to discuss denuclearization steps North Korea was taking. These high-stakes meetings eventually collapsed when Trump did not agree to sanctions relief for North Korea's dismantling of its main nuclear complex. Many experts say Kim is now focused on sending his troops to Russia to support their war efforts against Ukraine and that he may consider returning to diplomacy with Trump if the war ends.

In his Saturday speech, Kim reaffirmed that North Korea would support Russian efforts to defend their sovereignty. He accused the U.S. of fueling the tragic situation of Ukraine.

Enjoy the little things in life. For one day, you may look back and realize they were the big things. Many of life's failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.
