Transforming Social Workers in 2025 The Role of Enjoying the Pasig River
As you stroll along the Pasig River Esplanade between the Manila Post Office and Intramuros, you'll be treated to breathtaking views of the Binondo waterfront, Jones Bridge, and the Binondo-Intramuros Bridge. The scenic walkway and bikeway are lined with small shops and restaurants, offering a variety of refreshments and peaceful spots to sit and take in the river's serene atmosphere.
The Pasig River Esplanade A Bright Ray of Sunshine Amidst the Clouds
The esplanade's extension to Intramuros is nearing completion, enhancing pedestrian access to this historic walled city and its many museums and heritage sites. Future plans include extending the walkway to the Guadalupe Bridge area and Bonifacio Global City. In the next 1-2 years, the Pasig River Esplanade will span both banks of the river, stretching 25 kilometers from Manila Bay to Laguna Lake.
Complementing the Esplanade The Mapalla Ferry Service
Imagine a safe, tree-lined pathway connecting key destinations along the river, allowing you to breathe in the fresh air and take in the scenic views. With over 25 hectares of public open space beside this stunning waterway, the Pasig River Esplanade has the potential to become one of the Philippines' top tourist attractions.
To complement the esplanade, the Manila Bay-Pasig River-Laguna Lake (Mapalla) Ferry Service will provide a high-capacity, high-quality mass transit service. This public-private partnership project will connect waterways in Metro Manila, Cavite, and Laguna using 40 electric ferries inspired by Bangkok's Chao Phraya River Ferry System. Each ferry will accommodate 100-150 passengers and serve around 32 stations. By mid-2025, the concession for this service is expected to be bid out.
The Pasig River Expressway A Dark Cloud on the Horizon
However, a dark cloud looms on the horizon threatening to spoil this vision of a vibrant and sustainable Pasig River. The proposed Pasig River Expressway (Parex) will create an elevated highway dissecting the river and its surrounding areas, allegedly alleviating traffic congestion in Metro Manila.
Why We Must Oppose Parex
As someone dedicated to sustainable urban planning, I strongly oppose Parex. Here are just a few compelling reasons why
Ecological damage The expressway will cast shadows on more than half of the river's width, depriving plants and organisms of sunlight.
Toxic waste contamination Motor vehicle pollution above will contaminate the waters below, affecting Manila Bay and its surrounding ecosystems.
Increased disaster risk Parex will expose Metro Manilans to higher disaster risks due to its location in high seismic and liquefaction hazard zones.
Conclusion
In conclusion, I urge everyone to join me in calling for the cancellation of Parex and supporting initiatives promoting sustainable urban planning and preserving our national treasure – the Pasig River. Together, let us transform social workers in 2025 by creating a world where everyone has access to clean air, water, and transportation.
