Title Garin's Demand for PAO Expenses Seen as 'Picking on' Parents of Dengvaxia Victims

The Samahan ng mga Magulang ang mga Anak ay Biktima ng Dengavaxia (SMABD), a group of parents whose children's deaths were linked to the Dengvaxia vaccine, has strongly criticized former Health Secretary Janette Garin for demanding that the Public Attorney's Office (PAO) reveal its expenses in pushing court cases involving the anti-dengue jabs.

In recent radio and television interviews, Garin called on PAO to make public all its expenses in pushing Dengvaxia cases over the years. She criticized PAO's apparent tendency to spend public funds on these cases, instead of allocating the same resources to other underprivileged sectors that need [the agency's] services more. This move has been met with outrage and frustration from the parents who have lost their children due to the vaccine.

The Parents' Perspective

Girlie Samonte, a mother and SMABD officer, expressed her deep concern over Garin's demand. We are outraged by Garin's call for PAO to make public its expenses in pushing Dengvaxia cases. Instead of focusing on defending her own case, she is now targeting PAO, which was simply doing its job by assisting Filipino indigents who seek justice for the loss of their innocent children, Samonte said.

Samonte emphasized that PAO and its public lawyers were fulfilling their mandate to provide free legal services to indigents and underprivileged Filipinos. PAO and its lawyers were ordered to help us file cases against Garin and other responsible parties for the untimely death of our children when they were inoculated by Dengvaxia through DOH's mass vaccination in 2016, despite the fact that it was still experimental as it was under a clinical trial, she added.

The PAO Perspective

An unnamed PAO official expressed dismay over Garin's unusual call. The agency has not been spending taxpayers' money beyond its mandate to extend free legal services to indigents and underprivileged Filipinos. Some of our public lawyers were assisting the parents of Dengvaxia victims, and we are being paid by the government as public servants because we were directed by the higher-ups, the Department of Justice (DOJ), to do so, the PAO official pointed out.

Contrary to Garin's apparent insinuations, the PAO official said that the agency has not been remiss on its mandate to assist the poor. We are doing our job to provide free legal services to those who need it most, and we will continue to do so without compromising our commitment to serving the underprivileged sectors of society, the PAO official emphasized.

Conclusion

Garin's demand for PAO expenses has been seen as a clear attempt to discredit the agency and undermine its efforts to seek justice for the victims of Dengvaxia. The parents whose children were lost due to the vaccine are outraged by Garin's move, which they see as a deliberate attempt to pick on them.

As we work towards shaping a future where justice is served and the rights of all individuals are protected, it is crucial that we recognize the importance of upholding justice and protecting the vulnerable. In this context, PAO's efforts to provide free legal services to indigents and underprivileged Filipinos are commendable and deserving of recognition.

By standing with the parents who have lost their children due to Dengvaxia, we can work towards a future where justice is served and the rights of all individuals are protected.
