Iran says Hormuz reopening 'not possible' amid US naval blockade

Masters of Iran's Hormuz Strait reopens amid a U.S. naval blockade
Tehran—The Iranian government announced today that they are planning on reo[3D[K
reopening the strategic Hormuz Strait, effectively bypassing the United Sta[3D[K
States' ongoing naval blockades in the region. The move is seen as a bold a[1D[K
and significant step by experts, but officials from Washington have yet to [K
comment.
According to reports, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani signed an executive [K
order today, paving the way for Iran's Navy to begin operations at the Horm[4D[K
Hormuz Strait. The move comes just days after U.S. President Donald Trump a[1D[K
announced that he was sending an additional aircraft carrier task force to [K
the region in response to perceived threats from Tehran.
Despite the show of force by Washington, Rouhani expressed confidence in a [K
statement released today. The United States may have the world's largest n[1D[K
navy, but they do not have the Strait of Hormuz, Rouhani said. We control[7D[K
control this critical waterway, and we will not hesitate to use it.
The Hormuz Strait is one of the world's most important choke points for glo[3D[K
global oil supplies, with approximately 30% of all seaborne-traded crude pa[2D[K
passing through it each year. The strait has been the site of several naval[5D[K
naval conflicts over the years, including the Iran-Iraq War and more recent[6D[K
recently, the Gulf War.
Officials from the U.S. Navy have remained tight-lipped on whether or not t[1D[K
they will challenge Iran's reopening of the Hormuz Strait, but experts beli[4D[K
believe that it is only a matter of time before tensions in the region esca[4D[K
escalate further. Both sides are reportedly preparing for the worst as talk[4D[K
talks between Washington and Tehran remain deadlocked over issues such as n[1D[K
nuclear development and military involvement in Syria.
In a statement released today by Rouhani's administration, they said they w[1D[K
were willing to negotiate with Washington on these matters but that their p[1D[K
patience was wearing thin. We have shown restraint thus far, read part of[2D[K
of the statement. But we will not wait forever for meaningful dialogue wit[3D[K
with America.
The Iranian government has made it clear that its reopening of the Hormuz S[1D[K
Strait is nonnegotiable and that they are prepared to use force if necessar[8D[K
necessary to defend their interests there. Washington has yet to officially[10D[K
officially respond other than saying they are monitoring developments close[5D[K
closely.
Experts believe that this latest move by Iran could be a major escalation i[1D[K
in tensions between two nations locked in a decades-long proxy war around t[1D[K
the world. The Hormuz Strait is seen as one of Tehran's most powerful cards[5D[K
cards, and its reopening amid US naval blockades will undoubtedly increase [K
tensions further still
