Indonesia probes torpedo-like object found in its waters

Indonesia's navy is investigating a torpedo-like object that was fished fr[2D[K
from the ocean by a fisherman near the Lombok Strait. The object, which mea[3D[K
measures 3.7 meters long and 65 centimeters wide, was discovered on Monday [K
approximately 10 kilometers from Gili Trawangan, in southern West Nusa Teng[4D[K
Tenggara province. The fisherman, age 28, immediately reported the unusual [K
find to local authorities who retrieved it.
The Indonesian Navy will promptly carry out an in-depth examination... of [K
the device to determine its origin, function, and the data contained within[6D[K
within it, said navy spokesman Tunggul. The Indonesian National Armed For[3D[K
Forces will remain fully committed to safeguarding the sovereignty and secu[4D[K
security of Indonesia's territorial seas from all forms of unauthorized act[3D[K
activities, including the use of underwater devices or equipment by unautho[7D[K
unauthorized parties in Indonesian waters. The object is under strict supe[4D[K
supervision at a naval base in Mataram and will be sent to Jakarta for furt[4D[K
further investigation.
An initial examination by the West Nusa Tenggara Police bomb squad confirme[8D[K
confirmed that it did not contain any explosive or radioactive substances. [K
Indonesian media reported that the lettering on the object suggested it may[3D[K
may have been manufactured by China Shipbuilding Industry Corp. It appeared[8D[K
appeared to be a device to measure the speed of currents, similar to ones u[1D[K
used for oceanographic research.
This was not the first time a foreign object has been found in Indonesian [K
waters. In 2021, a fisherman discovered a seaglider in the Selayar Islands[7D[K
Islands, South Sulawesi province, that the military suspected was being use[3D[K
used for oceanographic research.
