Indian Billionaire's Son Offers Home for Escobar's Hippos
An unexpected turn of events came when Anant Ambani, the son of India's wea[3D[K
wealthiest man Mukesh Ambani, has offered to take in the hippos descended f[1D[K
from those originally introduced by drug kingpin Pablo Escobar. Rather than[4D[K
than having them killed as was planned, Ambani requested that Colombia allo[4D[K
allow the animals to be relocated safely and scientifically.
The 80 hippos would join hundreds of elephants already living at Vantara, I[1D[K
India's largest wildlife rescue center. In addition to elephants, the zoo i[1D[K
is home to many other large mammals like bears, tigers, lions, leopards, an[2D[K
and crocodiles. The facility has received criticism for bringing in critica[7D[K
critically endangered species, but Ambani assures that his detailed plan fo[2D[K
for the hippos' relocation will be carried out by trained veterinarians and[3D[K
and that the animals will have a suitable naturalistic setting at their new[3D[K
new home.
Escobar brought the hippos to Colombia in the 1980s, and they have wreaked [K
havoc on rivers there. Experts warn that if not controlled, these rapacious[9D[K
rapacious beasts could further destroy local ecosystems and even harm human[5D[K
humans. Fortunately, Ambani's proposal includes plans for a veterinary-led [K
capture and transport process as well as the creation of a suitable natural[7D[K
naturalistic setting at their new home.
Ambani is offering to provide a permanent home for Escobar's hippos. His Va[2D[K
Vantara animal center is already home to hundreds of elephants, as well as [K
50 bears, 160 tigers, 200 lions, 250 leopards, and 900 crocodiles, among ot[2D[K
other animals.
