Title India Eyes US Combat Vehicles A New Era in Defense Cooperation?
As Prime Minister Narendra Modi prepares to meet with President Donald Trump this week, India is making significant strides in its defense cooperation with the United States. The two nations are engaged in talks for the purchase and co-production of combat vehicles, as well as finalizing a fighter jet engine deal. This marks a shift from India's traditional reliance on Russia, which has long been the world's biggest arms importer.
In response to Trump's request last month to increase its purchases of US-made security equipment, India is moving forward with negotiations for several key defense projects. One area where progress is being made is in the co-production of Stryker combat vehicles manufactured by General Dynamics. These versatile vehicles have already seen action in Afghanistan and would provide a significant boost to India's military capabilities.
In addition to combat vehicles, India and the US are also working to finalize an agreement for the co-production of fighter jet engines in India for the Indian Air Force. This agreement was reached in 2023, and officials from Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. and General Electric are set to meet in the coming weeks to wrap up the contract.
The potential deals would see India acquiring a few hundred Strykers equipped with anti-tank guided missile systems, followed by co-production through a state-run firm. While it's unclear if these deals will be discussed during Modi and Trump's meeting, defense cooperation and technology are among the key issues set to be addressed.
As India continues to modernize its military capabilities, the potential for increased defense cooperation with the US is vast. With the two nations already working together on various defense projects, it's likely that we'll see even more collaboration in the future.
