Heathrow said it had set up an independent panel to review its response and added that lessons will be learned. The airport has faced growing criticism over delays and cancellations in recent years and there have been fears it could fall further behind as demand picks up with the easing of coronavirus restrictions.

London's Heathrow Airport resumed full operations on Saturday as it ordered a probe into how it dealt with a power outage that shut Europe's busiest air hub for almost a day.

British Airways, whose main hub is Heathrow, said it had operated around 90 percent of its schedule on Saturday and promised a near-full schedule for Sunday after chief executive Sean Doyle on Friday warned the huge impact would last days.

The airport, the world's fifth-busiest, had been due to handle 1,351 flights on Friday, flying up to 291,000 passengers.

Power was lost at around 530 a.m. on Friday and after a thorough assessment of what went wrong, we have now restored power to all terminals, a Heathrow spokesperson said in a statement.

We will continue to monitor the situation over the coming days.

The outage, which grounded hundreds of flights, was caused by a cable fire and came less than two weeks after an IT failure forced the airport to cancel more than 100 flights on Christmas Day.
