EU leaders seek to do more to 'de-escalate' in Middle East

EU leaders vowed on Friday to do more to de-escalate conflicts in the Midd[4D[K
Middle East, as they prepared for discussions with their regional counterpa[9D[K
counterparts from Egypt, Lebanon and Syria in Cyprus.
The bloc's top brass held a meeting on Thursday where they agreed to step [K
up political and economic engagement, European Commission President Ursula[6D[K
Ursula von der Leyen told reporters.
We want to de-escalate. We want to prevent conflict, she said. And we do[2D[K
do this by being much more present.
The 27-member EU is set to meet in Brussels on Monday with the leaders of E[1D[K
Egypt, Lebanon and Syria for a first ever summit focused solely on the Midd[4D[K
Middle East.
A draft agenda seen by AFP shows the talks will focus on three themes prom[4D[K
promoting political reform; tackling regional conflicts; and boosting econo[5D[K
economic cooperation.
