In a recent interview at the White House with President Donald Trump, Musk pointed out that the country's budget deficit is not optional and should be reduced to avoid incurring more public debt.

The Trump administration finds itself on a collision course with US courts as federal judges questioned the legality of White House cost-cutting measures. Multiple lawsuits seek to halt what opponents characterize as an illegal power grab. However, Musk says that Americans voted for major government reform and that he is seeking to be as transparent as possible when asked about potential conflicts of interest.

Musk's team has moved through federal agencies, freezing aid programs, and pushing workforce reductions. An executive order outlining the scope of DOGE included details of a federal workforce reduction plan that will restrict agencies to hire only one employee for every four that depart. The order also requires the head of each agency to consult with DOGE when deciding which vacancies to fill.

The challenge that Musk faces is in part because his companies have had huge US government contracts. Additionally, critics are alarmed by the fact that the DOGE reform team has gained access through the US Treasury to sensitive data.
