Title Crunchy Consequences US Finds Live Beetles Hiding in Japanese Snacks

In a surprising discovery, dozens of live beetles were found hidden inside a shipment of Japanese snacks at Los Angeles International Airport. The giant beetles, measuring up to five inches (13 centimeters) long, were concealed among potato chips, chocolate, and other treats.

The 37 specimens, which included scarab beetles, stag beetles, and darkling beetles, were likely destined for collectors of exotic insects. Estimated to be worth around $1,500, the beetles posed a significant threat to US agriculture resources, according to US Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

Smuggled beetles can become a serious pest by eating plants, leaves, and roots, and by laying eggs on tree bark which damages our forests, said Cheryl Davies of the CBP in Los Angeles. It's essential that we inspect international shipments thoroughly to prevent the introduction of invasive species.

This discovery highlights the importance of strict customs regulations to protect US agriculture resources. The beetles will likely find their way to local zoos that have permits for such creatures.

While Japan is famous for its innovative snacks, including KitKat chocolates flavored with cherry blossom or wasabi, beetles are not commonly consumed in the country. In contrast, locusts, grasshoppers, and crickets do find their way onto the Japanese dinner table, especially in rural areas.

The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance in preventing the introduction of invasive species that can harm our ecosystem. As global trade continues to grow, it's crucial that we remain vigilant in protecting our agriculture resources.

Enjoy the little things in life. For one day, you may look back and realize they were the big things. Many of life's failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.
