Title Senator Bong Go Urges DBM and DOH to Honor Obligations to Health Workers

As the world continues to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, it is crucial to recognize the tireless efforts of healthcare workers who risked their lives to care for patients. Senator Bong Go has recently emphasized the importance of settling the unpaid balance of health emergency allowance (HEA) for these unsung heroes.

Unpaid Debt

According to Health Undersecretary Achilles Bravo, the P27 billion allocated for HEA had been downloaded to regional offices, with only about 10% pending disbursement due to documentation issues. This highlights the need for efficient processes and communication between government agencies to ensure timely compensation for healthcare workers.

Moral and Financial Obligations

As chairman of the Senate Committee on Health, Senator Go emphasized that Republic Act 11712 mandates the complete release of HEA stipends. The government has a moral and financial obligation to compensate healthcare workers for their services rendered during the pandemic. It is essential to recognize the value of these workers' sacrifices and provide them with the compensation they deserve.

Challenges and Delays

Despite efforts to resolve the issue, there have been delays and setbacks. DOH requested an additional P5 billion from DBM in October 2023 to cover new claims, but it was denied due to budget constraints. Moreover, Congress had included a P2.5 billion allocation for HEA in the 2025 budget, but President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. vetoed it.

Urging Action

Senator Go has urged DBM to resolve the issue and ensure that healthcare workers receive their rightful compensation without further delay. It is crucial to prioritize the welfare of these dedicated professionals who have put their lives on the line to save others.

In conclusion, completing payment to health workers is not only a moral obligation but also an investment in the well-being of the country. By acknowledging the value of healthcare workers' services and providing them with fair compensation, we can create a more just and equitable society.

Enjoy the little things in life. For one day, you may look back and realize they were the big things. Many of life's failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.
