UK Military Vets Rebuild Lives Through Viking Longboat Restoration

A majestic Viking longship, crafted from solid oak and designed according to authentic Scandinavian plans, has finally been completed by a group of military veterans battling mental health issues. The project, which began in 2019, has served as a journey of self-discovery and healing for the ex-soldiers involved.

According to Bob Marshall, CEO of The Viking Boat Co., this project is not just about building a boat – it's about rebuilding people. We're making boats, but we're actually rebuilding lives, he said. For Marshall, who has served in both the Falkland Islands and Northern Ireland, this passion project has been his driving force since its inception.

The longboat, named Stormbird, measures 30 feet (nine meters) and is currently on display at the JORVIK Viking Festival in York. Visitors can marvel at its historical accuracy and expertly crafted woodwork, featuring decorative elements such as carved roses and a mythical dragon-like creature.

Over 60 veterans have contributed to the project, some of whom suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). For these ex-soldiers, the experience has been a lifeline. Every time I come down here, I just forget, said Angie Reid, 58, who has added decorative work to the boat's gunnels.

The project has also provided a sense of camaraderie that many veterans miss from their time in the forces. For Kevan Blackburn, the experience has been transformative It's just getting out and mental health-wise it's just helped so much... you feel in a happier place than you were before, he said.

Marshall believes that challenging projects like this one can help crowd out destructive thinking that plagues PTSD sufferers. If you get PTSD... it's a big powerful thing. It needs knocking out, it's got to be moved aside so the only way you can move it is taking a bigger target, he explained.

As the project moves forward, Marshall remains committed to its success. The next step will be a fundraising campaign using the completed boat as a symbol of hope and healing for other veterans.
